Speaking of gratuitous sex scenes, what was up with that story Reiko told about being seduced by a 13 year old? If the scene was just that the girl had forced herself on Reiko and then lied about it, sure okay, still a little far-fetched but fine. I think he also said something about her looking/feeling like a little girl and that should not be sexy.

Men and women can interact without having sex.

Toru and Reiko having sex was also weird. For anyone reading, if you are ever in a position to have sex with someone who is basically having a breakdown, do NOT have sex with this person. Then he says later that he doesn’t know if he should have done it. When Toru and Naoko have sex, he describes her as crying uncontrollably. All of the sex written about is unrealistic and often unhealthy. It seemed the only way Murakami solved any conflict was with sex or suicide. I liked Midori at times, but then she would do/say something that seemed like only a woman in a male’s headspace would do/say and I would get annoyed with her. I only enjoyed Storm Trooper and Midori’s father and they had like 4-5 scenes total. So horribly I don’t understand how any woman or anyone who has had an actual personal relationship of any kind with a woman can enjoy this book. This is a common one that I’ve seen, but Murakami writes women horribly. However, I struggled to get through it due to having to put the book down a couple times after certain moments. I was expecting a lot more based on the general reaction I saw/heard. I recently finished Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood after seeing it many many times on different threads and various places across the world and internet.
